Entrevista a Laura Rico Caballo

Conversamos con Laura Rico Caballo, psicóloga arteterapeuta con más de veinte años de experiencia en esta profesión. Con ella indagamos en la terapia del arte con niños y jóvenes en consulta privada, en el ámbito hospitalario y con población en riesgo de exclusión social, y descubrimos qué es Arteterapia y qué puede ofrecer a sus usuarios en contextos tan variados.

¿Qué es Arteterapia?

Me resulta interesante responder primero a qué NO es Arteterapia, algo que he tenido que explicar a los profesionales sanitarios en el contexto hospitalario. Arteterapia no es un taller ocupacional ni una clase de pintura, no es un apéndice de la escuela ni un mero entretenimiento o un experimento, puesto que se lleva haciendo desde hace décadas en Estados Unidos e Inglaterra. Arteterapia es un medio discreto y natural para el niño y en general más cercano a las personas, generándoles más tranquilidad al alejarse de la patología. Es una forma de comunicar que no precisa lenguaje ni habilidad previa y que permite trabajar entre sesiones muy bien, generando en el niño mucha autonomía y capacidad de trabajo personal, que es el objetivo último que tenemos los terapeutas.

La formación en Arteterapia acoge perfiles profesionales muy variados ¿Qué profesiones pueden aplicar arteterapia?

Todos tenemos una profesión de partida. Pongamos que ese es nuestro nombre,. Luego tenemos apellidos, y podemos tener muchos. Entonces, yo soy un psicólogo arteterapeuta, tú eres un pedagogo arteterapeuta, tú eres un sociólogo arteterapeuta, y esa raíz nos marca mucho para lo que estamos entendiendo en esa formación de posgrado. Así, cada uno de estos profesionales va a utilizar la arteterapia de una forma distinta. Cada uno debe saber cuál es el campo desde el que le es más fácil aplicar el arte y cuál es el que le queda más lejos, y ser muy prudente. Es importante tener cuidado y conocer nuestros límites, porque hay espacio para todos. Considero muy conveniente que existan asociaciones de profesionales de la arteterapia donde se pueda cuidar y discutir la integración de todos estos perfiles de forma que se pueda mantener una razonable libertad de acción y al tiempo unos protocolos comunes de actuación. Con esta intención en España se están creando con firmeza asociaciones y federaciones de asociaciones como FEAPA, que al igual que los colegios profesionales de psicólogos, son tan importantes para cuidar el desarrollo armónico de la profesión por el bien de todos.

¿Para qué comenzaste a utilizar técnicas artísticas con niños en tu consulta privada?

Antes de estudiar Arteterapia, siempre trabajé con juego y artes plásticas con niños. De alguna forma, todos lo estamos haciendo, solo que no lo estamos explotando al 100%. Jugar con los niños, o verles jugar con otros, siempre me ha ayudado mucho a conocerles. El dibujo es muy útil, no solo como test proyectivo, sino como herramienta de los niños para crecer o cambiar simulando la vida. Cuando empecé a ser consciente de la utilidad del arte y le saqué todo el provecho posible, me di cuenta de que para los niños el arte es su canal natural de trabajo. El que no es su canal natural es el lenguaje verbal. Es más, a veces ves que juegan con el lenguaje, y dicen “Si” o “No” dependiendo de si rima, pega o les apetece. No es tanto mentir, como una diversión o ponerlo a tu servicio. Con el dibujo, en cambio, esto no pasa: son más sinceros y más comprometidos.

Después de tantos años utilizando el arte como herramienta terapéutica ¿Dirías que existe algún niño que se beneficie más del trabajo artístico?

Yo daría la vuelta a esa pregunta. La pregunta debería ser ¿Para qué niño no aplicarías el arte? No se me ocurre ninguno. Lo que si tienes que elegir es qué actividad artística: hay niños que por lo que sea no quieren pintar, y funcionan muy bien con la música o con la danza. Este podría ser el caso de los niños hiperactivos, que se cansan, están hiperestimulados por la cantidad de material que tienen sobre la mesa, se levantan, se sientan… Pero todos los niños han nacido para ello, solo hay que encontrar qué arte les resulta más atractivo o intuitivo. Es más, los niños tienen una grandísima dificultad para no hacer (incluso cuando están enfermos), por lo que si no son espontáneos ante algo, es porque estamos probando una llave equivocada en la cerradura.

¿Las familias están a gusto con este tipo de terapia?

En ocasiones más que con la consulta de psicología tradicional, entre otras cosas porque no les suena tanto a “tengo un niño que está enfermo”. Les resulta más cotidiano y llevadero. De hecho mucha gente prefiere decir: “Mi niño está haciendo Arteterapia” que “llevo a mi hijo al Psicólogo” que a veces puede ser un estigma. Eso no significa que mintamos a los niños: Hay que explicarle quiénes somos y cómo a través de la pintura, música, etc. vamos a ayudarle a sacar mejores notas, a estar más tranquilo, a tener menos miedo… Es una forma súper cómoda de explicar qué están haciendo, sin caer en etiquetas que suenen a enfermedad en el entorno.

Entonces ¿La familia es bienvenida a participar en Arteterapia?

Extraordinariamente bienvenida, especialmente para los niños chiquitos, para los que la familia es todo. Cuando evalúan lo mejor del taller, casi siempre hacen referencia a los padres: Difícilmente podremos ayudar al niño sin incluir a su familia. El niño que acude al taller puede incluso, en situaciones determinadas como la hospitalización, producir bienestar y cosas bonitas para los demás, y eso le enorgullece. Muchos niños en la cama del hospital sienten el deseo de corresponder a todos los mimos y atenciones que reciben y cuando les preguntas que quieren hacer piden hacer regalos para los que les visitan. Esta puede ser una primera forma de acercarse a su mundo interior y nos está comunicando ya necesidades y emociones.
Cuando vienen a consulta muchas veces vienen cabizbajos y preocupados porque sea la consecuencia de algo que hacen mal o incluso que tienen ellos de malo. Cuando la propuesta es pintar, esculpir, bailar ya no hay un niño preocupado por acudir a un psicólogo porque se ha portado mal sino alguien que aporta y sabe hacer cosas y es un “buen trabajador”.

¿El conocimiento del arte forma parte de la terapia del arte?

Sí. Definitivamente. Desde el origen del arte al sentido de cada movimiento y la evolución de la historia, la biografía el artista y su psicología. El arte contemporáneo, en concreto, por ejemplo los expresionistas norteamericanos de la segunda mitad del Siglo XX, son muy buenos para introducir a los niños en arteterapia. Como el Action Painting, un estilo que promueve el goteo y escurrido de la pintura salpicada sobre el lienzo, enfatizando el acto físico de pintar como un aspecto esencial del trabajo final del artista. A veces los papás no acaban de entender del todo el arte contemporáneo, con lo cual es una manera de que los niños estén orgullosos de su comprensión, mucho más intuitiva. Jackson Pollock trabaja mucho el impulso y hace a los niños pintar con el cuerpo, con escobas, con esponjas grandes, arrastrarse sobre el papel… Es un pintor ideal para niños cuando tienes un buen espacio. El arte tiene que servirnos para nuestro desarrollo: el artista lo hizo con esa intención.

La Literatura también es arte ¿Qué beneficios terapéuticos tiene el uso de técnicas narrativas en terapia infantil y juvenil?

Comencé estudiando Hipnosis, y para conseguir que las personas entraran en los procesos que emocionales que yo buscaba, tenía que construir una narración verbal, pero ¿Qué mejor que utilizar las narraciones existentes de los grandes autores? Siempre he sido muy aficionada a la lectura y he visto cómo la Literatura tiene una carga emocional que te lleva a tus propias cosas. Por tanto, es la llave que puede abrir ciertas cerraduras. La Literatura en terapia tiene los mismos fundamentos que la plástica o la danza y la música. Es arte y por lo tanto se comprende bajo la disciplina de denominamos ahora “Arteterapia”, y funciona muy bien a nivel emocional.

Durante tu trayectoria profesional has tenido la oportunidad de trabajar con arteterapia en el ámbito hospitalario con niños oncológicos y trasplantados. En tu publicación “Dolor, niños y arte” explicas cómo el trabajo artístico incide en la percepción del dolor por parte de los niños.

Al trabajar con niños oncológicos y trasplantados de larga hospitalización y con mucho dolor vemos la inclinación natural que tienen los niños para el arte, ya que son capaces de trabajar a pesar de estar con mascarillas, sueros y altas dosis de medicación. Los objetivos que nos marcamos son: reducir el estrés y la ansiedad fruto de la hospitalización, promover la expresión emocional, aumentar la autoestima y el estado del ánimo, enseñar a superar dificultades de una forma distinta, mejorar la forma de comunicarse, posibilitar el encuentro con otros niños, disminuir su percepción del dolor y facilitar el encuentro del significado personal de la enfermedad.

La Arteterapia funciona muy bien en el tratamiento del dolor, la receptividad a la alimentación y la recuperación del movimiento. Prestamos servicio cama a cama, para los niños que no quieren salir o que están más enfermos, con los que trabajamos preocupaciones personales como la muerte, los problemas con la familia, etc. El objetivo último con estos niños es que acaben acudiendo al aula donde acuden los niños que están más fuertes física y psicológicamente, y así romper su aislamiento. A veces los niños llegan al aula arrastrándose, pero siempre salen mejor que llegaron. El proceso artístico hace que el niño saque una energía para esa actividad, dejando todo lo demás en suspenso, atendiendo únicamente a la tarea y dejando de atender al dolor. Es estupendo ver cómo entran y cómo salen.

¿Cómo se trabaja con arte en un contexto tan limitante con es el hospitalario?

Trabajamos con material hospitalario, que generalmente les da mucho miedo: les proponemos que diseñen y decoren sus propias batas o que pinten y disparen con jeringuillas sobre el papel Con arteterapia se trabajan muy bien los miedos: reproducimos los miedos sobre el papel que es lugar controlado, y así los hacemos domésticos. Les damos una forma y buscamos alternativas en un espacio muy seguro, como es el espacio de la ficción. Da miedo lo desconocido, lo grande, lo inabarcable, pero cuando al miedo se le da forma, se concretiza, se trabaja, entonces deja de dar miedo.

Otra actividad interesante es el diario artístico personal: una memoria terapéutica de su paso por el hospital, compuesto por imágenes creadas e imaginadas durante los ejercicios, para recordar el proceso de curación años después. También creamos un diario colectivo al que todos los niños contribuyen y así generan una memoria colectiva para que los nuevos niños que son internados puedan conocer a otros que han pasado por una situación similar.

En la actualidad trabajas con niños en riesgo de exclusión social, en el proyecto “Ventillarte” organizado por la ONG Pueblos Unidos desde 2004, con el objetivo de fomentar la salud psicosocial ¿Qué necesidades especiales tiene esta población y qué recursos ofrece el arteterapia para ellos?

En este contexto, el principal problema es lo social: Estamos ante niños que no tienen un problema psíquico o físico como los mencionados anteriormente, pero sin embargo tienen un mal funcionamiento social. Me parece interesante diferenciar las tres necesidades diferentes de los niños de los que hemos hablado, pero también cómo al final se mezclan todos, ya que unos son causa y consecuencia de los otros. Con los niños pequeños nuestro objetivo es evitar que el problema social no desborde su psiquismo. Con los adolescentes, sin embargo, ya han empezado a pasar cosas, y por ello el objetivo consiste en detener los procesos de marginación que han podido comenzar a aparecer, asociación con bandas, consumo de sustancias… A través del arte damos la oportunidad de que ellos mismos se retraten y comuniquen quiénes son y qué necesitan. Es lo que llamamos Arte Prosocial: Yo, que se supone que soy el marginado o como artista sensibilizado con esta problemática, os hablo de qué cambios podéis hacer vosotros, los que miráis desde fuera “los integrados”, para dejar de mantener esta situación que enferma a las personas y colectivos.

Antes de terminar, Laura ¿Qué consejos darías a nuestros lectores?

Lo primero que diría a los padres es que den un entorno adecuado de libertad a sus hijos: libertad para crear y para ser. Es muy positivo que proporcionen espacio y material suficiente para que los niños puedan pintar o crear por distintos medios a gusto sin que ello se convierta en motivo de conflicto por manchar, desordenar o hacer ruido. La cocina o el baño puede en ocasiones ser mucho mejor que el dormitorio para hacer arcilla o pintar sin riesgo de hacer desastres. Y sobre todo les diría que difícilmente disfrutarán los niños del arte si no perciben en sus padres un disfrute genuino. Lo que les gusta a los padres, es muy posible que les guste a los niños. Ver que toda la familia disfruta con la actividad creativa aunque cada uno tenga sus gustos particulares es un modo de suponer que hay intimidad, complicidad y comunicación y puede funcionar para simple como vínculo entre los miembros.
